In the kitchen, Mama prepares the meal and calls for Yetta to help with the table. The slightly rebellious Yetta wants to change her name and be called Yvette. Mama counters the name change, and more ideas that Yetta has about her low station in life, and the simple style of food that is being served.

Yetta wants to seek after pleasure, and status symbols. Mama goes about showing her the pleasure she has in keeping busy at her housework, and recognizing the blessings their simple possessions bring, just because they are already theirs. Once papa gets home for lunch that sneaky old mama drives her point home even further. By the time Sara gets home, Yetta has a new appreciation for the things she has, and how easily they can be lost in this life.

PS: Did you ever stop to think, these teenage girls, with the same kind of attitudes and desires that all teenagers have had all through history, are about the age of parents of the Baby Boom generation. All they would have to do is go through the struggles of the war years, and do a little more growing up. With a teacher of wisdom like mama, I’m sure they would be dispensing their own wisdom to their own brood soon enough.
